Maximizing Your Trade-In Value: Advice from a Rider with 57 Years of Experience

Jan. 24 2026 News By By Brett Hester

My name’s Brett, and I’ve been the Sales Manager here at Heartland Honda for 22 years. I’ve also been riding motorcycles for 57 years, so when I look at a trade-in, I’m not just looking at numbers—I’m looking at it the same way I’d want someone to look at my bike.

One of the most common questions I get is simple:

“What can I do to get the most for my trade?”

The answer isn’t complicated, but it does matter. Here’s what I’ve learned after appraising thousands of motorcycles, ATVs, side-by-sides, and scooters over the years.

First Impressions Matter (Even with Trades)

You don’t need to go crazy, but a clean machine always shows better.

Before you bring it in:

  • Wash it
  • Clean the wheels and plastics
  • Wipe down the seat and controls
  • Make sure the tires are properly inflated

A clean trade tells me you cared about it—and that absolutely plays into value.

Maintenance Records Go a Long Way

If you’ve taken care of your unit, show it.

Oil changes, scheduled services, and major repairs all help me feel confident putting a strong number on your trade. A well-maintained machine is easier to stand behind, and that helps me justify more money for it.

Be Straight About Condition

I’ve been doing this long enough to spot issues pretty quickly, so honesty really does help.

Scratches, normal wear, or known mechanical concerns aren’t deal breakers. When I know the full story upfront, I can value the trade accurately the first time—no surprises later.

Stock Is Best, But Smart Accessories Help

Original, unmodified machines are usually the easiest to value, but good accessories can absolutely help.

Things that typically add value:

  • Windshields
  • Winches
  • Roofs and enclosures
  • Saddlebags or luggage
  • OEM accessories

Performance mods don’t always add dollar-for-dollar value, but clean, tasteful upgrades never hurt.

Bring Your Trade In If You Can

I can give rough estimates over the phone or by email, but the best and most accurate appraisals happen when I can see the machine in person.

When your trade is here, I can:

  • Verify overall condition
  • Check tires, brakes, and wear items
  • Look for leaks, noises, or hidden damage
  • Give you my strongest and most confident number

Seeing it in person removes guesswork—for both of us.

If You’re Sending Photos, Details Matter

If you can’t bring it in right away and need a photo-based estimate, good photos make a huge difference.

Please include:

  • Right side
  • Left side
  • Front
  • Rear
  • Close-up of tire tread

Clear, honest photos help me avoid undervaluing your trade and speed up the process when you’re ready to move forward.

Why I Usually Recommend Trading Instead of Selling Private

I ride, so I get why people consider selling on their own—but most folks underestimate the hassle.

With a trade-in:

  • No strangers coming to your house
  • No test rides with people you don’t know
  • No online listings or wasted time
  • Sales tax savings on your next purchase
  • One smooth, simple transaction

For a lot of customers, the tax savings alone make the trade a no-brainer.

How We Appraise Trades at Heartland Honda

We don’t just look at a book number and move on.

When I appraise a trade, I consider:

  • Current market demand
  • Overall condition and maintenance
  • What it takes to recondition it properly
  • What I’d feel good selling it for next

That’s how we keep trade values fair and realistic—without games.

No-Pressure Trade Appraisals

If you’re upgrading, downsizing, or just curious what your unit’s worth, I’m happy to help.

Our trade appraisals are:

  • Free
  • Straightforward
  • No obligation

Even if you’re not ready to buy today, knowing your numbers helps you plan.
